Prof. Yang’s studies focus on political theory and methods, comparative politics (world politics), contemporary Chinese government and politics, domestic political economy and foreign relations of China. He has published seven academic monographs, three research textbooks, about 100 academic papers in Chinese and English, two of which were published in Chinese Social Sciences, and nearly 100 commentaries on Chinese politics, world politics, and political theory. Quite a number of theoretical research results have been very influential in academic, social and academic fields. His academic achievements include but are not limited to the following:
Discipline development
1) Prof. Yang has contributed a lot to pioneering and establishing the study on China's comparative politics. The newly published Comparative Politics: Theory and Method (2016) is considered to have broken through the research system of the comparative politics dominated by the United States and have started the framework of China’s comparative politics. 2) Introduction to Political Science (Fourth edition) is one of the two famous textbooks with the largest circulation in this field in China. 3) Introduction to Chinese Politics and Politics is a teaching reference book for Chinese politics courses in many overseas universities.
Democratic theory
Prof. Yang puts forward the concept of the homogenization condition of democracy. This concept has changed the prevailing views in China on democracy, especially Western-style democracy, and proposed an alternative democratic model of “governable democracy.” (See Returning Democracy (2014); The Concept and Practice Democracy (2015); Chinese Democracy: Trajectory and Trend (1978-2020) (2015); Governable Democracy: Chinese Politics System---Democratic Logic of Decision-Making Process (forthcoming)
The world political system
Prof. Yang constructed a world political system consists of a starting point, a process structure and a status quo structure, and its significance is to promote the formation of an autonomous way of thinking. (See on “The World Political System: Concurrently on the Historical and Logical Starting Point of the Construction of Autonomous Chinese Social Sciences,” in CASS Journal of Political Science, vol. 1, 2017)
The concept of party-centrism
In the social science system, prof. Yang has proposed party-centrism, which is relative to the social-centrism and state-centrism. This concept has been used and studied in depth in a number of academic papers and doctoral theses. The theoretical system of social sciences is a product of the experience of state building, and party-centrism is a concept refined based on the path of China and other developing countries. (See State and System in Institutional Changes (2011))
Restatement of the basic concepts of political science
1) Prof. Yang reinterpreted the concept of democratic centralism and enriched its meaning with the Chinese model. (See “Democratic Centralism as a Chinese Model,” in Political Science Research, vol. 6, 2015) 2) Reconstructed the theory of legitimacy, contributing new meanings to the legitimacy of the ruling party. (See “The Abuse and Restatement of the Concept of Legitimacy,” in CASS Journal of Political Science, vol. 2, 2016)
National governance capabilities
Based on the research of comparative political development, Prof. Yang theorized the proposition of ‘modernization of national governance system and governance capacity’ and constructed a research paradigm for analysing national governance capacity. (See On the General Theory of State Governance ---A New Paradigm to Explore the Study of World Politics, in Teaching and Research, vol. 1, 2017)
Chinese politics
Representative results of Prof. Yang’ s studies include Chinese political epistemology, interest group classification research, and the theory of stages of Chinese political development.
The transformation of political research paradigm
The study of political science, especially Chinese political science, has been always centred on the change of political system. However, the enlightenment from comparative political development, Chinese history and culture, and actual governance achievements is that the focus of politics should shift to national governance, that is, to complete the transition of the paradigm from “seeking change” to “seeking governance.” (See “The Transformation of the Research Paradigm of Political Science: From ‘Seeking Change’ to ‘Seeking Governance’,” forthcoming)
Interdisciplinary research
Prof. Yang put forward the political law system, which is to study Chinese politics from the perspective of law, in order to get rid of the impression of “power tactics” in political science, and to cooperate with the construction of “the rule of law in China.” Major scientific research projects undertaken in recent years:
